Each semester the women of DG host an athletic tournament with
Panhellenic and IFC organizations. For the fall, both sororities and
fraternities competed in the annual Anchor
Slam to prove their basketball skills and give back.
While competition brought excitement to the HPER basketball courts on
Sunday, December 3rd, Delta Gamma’s Service
for Sight was the real winner. The
members of Alpha Omega raised over seven thousand dollars to support the
fraternity’s national philanthropy as well as regional organizations like the
Burlsworth Kid’s and the local Lion’s Club chapter.
In addition to fundraising, box tops were collected at the event to
raise profits that go towards schools for the blind across the United States.
The women of Delta Gamma chose in 1873 to Do Good and continue with the
tradition by impacting the lives of those with visual impairments.
Participants of Anchor Slam
expressed their excitement in being able to give back to the community by
playing a game of basketball. Member of
Beta Theta Pi Rich Wilson said his team was committed to the tournament and
practiced at the HPER before the big event.
The women of Delta Gamma played an active role in the success of the
tournament by coaching the teams and refereeing the games. Collegian member
Chandler Little played basketball in high school and said she noticed the
dedication of the teams.
“As a referee, it was really fun to watch and see everyone compete for
a good cause.” Little said.
For the Panhellenic division, the members of Chi Omega took first
place, while the men of Phi Delta Theta took the W in the IFC tournament.
