Pizza Pie with Alpha Chi

The Best Combination

Pizza, a powerful word that unites hungry and broke college students alike, has another meaning for the Delta Rho chapter of Alpha Chi Omega: fighting domestic violence. Alpha Chi Omega chapters everywhere honor National Domestic Violence Month in October by raising awareness on campus in creative and educational ways. For the Delta Rho chapter of AXO, that means combining pizza and philanthropy at our annual event Pizza Pie with Alpha Chi.

Piece of Pizza for Peace at Home

On the evening of October 5, Pizza Pie with Alpha Chi opened with enough pizza to feed the entire campus! With a long almost as long as Senior Walk, hundreds of supporters swarmed the event eager to pay $5 for unlimited pizza, refreshments, and snow-cones. The proceeds went towards Peace at Home, a local shelter for domestic violence survivors. Josie Bates, one of the leaders for Pizza Pie with Alpha Chi, commented on the cause, “Pizza Pie is great because we’re really spreading awareness during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence is kind of hard to talk about sometimes, but we’re getting out there and telling people about it. And doing something that’s fun and showing our U of A community how we can help solve this problem.”

It Doesn’t End Here

As tables cleared, pizza boxes were emptied, and the sun set on campus, Pizza Pie with Alpha Chi came to a close. But the message continues well beyond the event: domestic violence is still an important issue that needs attention. Long time Peace at Home volunteer Kathryn Revelle said, “These women need other women to help them and make them feel important and valued. That’s why it’s important to volunteer at women’s shelters like Peace at Home. We were honored with Peace at Home’s Courage Award last week and that goes to show what a great working relationship we have with them and how close the shelter is to our chapter’s hearts.” Alpha Chi Omega proudly accepted AXO the 2017 Courage Award from Peace at Home for raising over $35,000 dollars for the shelter. Pride doesn’t even begin to cover how wonderful Alpha Chi Omega feels to spread awareness and aid survivors. If Pizza Pie with Alpha Chi’s success didn’t motivate us enough, the award proves as a physical representation of why we fundraise. Going forward, AXO will eagerly continue to make each Peace at Home better each year to ensure no one has to endure a love that hurts.
