Kappa Delta’s “Shamrock” week,
which took place March 12 through March 14, was a major success. Shamrock is
Kappa Delta’s annual philanthropy event with all proceeds going towards Prevent
Child Abuse America and our local beneficiary, the Children’s Safety Center,
located in Springdale, Arkansas. This year’s major events included a dinner
“Sliders for Shamrock” and a “Color Me KD” Paint Dodgeball tournament.
To kick off Shamrock, Kappa Delta
wanted to do something different for their philanthropy dinner. Instead of the
typical Shamrock dinner, the chapter decided to have a more laid-back backyard
cookout, “Sliders for Shamrock”. There was a make your own burger table under
the lantern lit tents out back and when people were done with that, there was
ice cream for dessert. From 9pm until 11pm, the burger line was never empty.
There was such a huge turn out that “at one point, the line went from the food
table outside and curved through the house, continuing out the front door,”
said Madison Rohr, a freshman KD working the front desk, “It was crazy.”
However, the fun did not stop
there. On Saturday from 12-4 there was a paint dodge ball tournament held in Wilson
Park. Even through the rain, sororities and fraternities showed up to win and
to get dirty while doing it. Not one participant left without a little mud or
paint on their uniforms. Out of all the
teams, Phi Gamma Delta took first place for the fraternities while Zeta Tau
Alpha took first place for the sororities.
Bailey Barnett, Kappa Delta’s Vice
President of Community Service, who has been planning Shamrock since the
beginning of the year made 2015’s Shamrock goal $30,000. And when Shamrock week
was over, the total amount raised was $34,000, which is about $10,000 more than
last year’s Shamrock. Despite a rainy week, Kappa Delta was ecstatic to see
such an amazing turnout. The chapter would like to thank all who participated,
the University of Arkansas community, and the Greek Life community for helping
make this year’s Shamrock week such a huge accomplishment.
