Chi Omega’s BBQ to Make a Wish Come True

When you do something together that has some kind of positive effect on the world something a little like joy happens.

Last week Chi Omega’s BBQ to make a Wish Come True was a sweet reminder of community and what it looks like when we come together for something bigger than ourselves. When you think about it there are a lot of things that went on to make this event happen. Dickies BBQ and Whole Hog café donated enough meat for 800 people. McKee Foods, in Gentry, donated enough little debbies to last until chi-obesity takes over the world. Harris Baking company, in Rogers, donated a thousand hamburger buns. It was cool to watch food suppliers, and restaurants from all over Northwest Arkansas donate so much and expect absolutely nothing in return. I’m telling you, something beautiful happens when we do this thing together.

The Philanthropy Committee of Chi Omega is going under some major changes this year. Philanthropy Chair, and one of my best friends, Maggie Benton said “We want to keep improving every year.” This time around every member sold five tickets to the dinner, two more than the usual. Each ticket was $5, and I’m not math-y, but I can tell you that Make A Wish

Foundation just got bank. The line for food was all the way from the kitchen to the front yard for a good chunk of time. Also this year we added raffle tickets, a photo booth, and a baggo toss. Next time around we hope to have live music!

Personally, my favorite part was the music played on the front lawn. Girls on the yard danced to blaring Jackson 5 tunes while on a mission to sell tickets. It was hilarious to watch them unashamedly dance and sing (scream) on the front lawn. This kind of exaggerated celebration happens in sororities, quite frequently. But there’s a different kind of feeling in the air when there is a purpose to your actions, beyond the ground you walk on.
