AFLV 2015 Conference

Students on the bus on the way to Indianapolis
As mentioned in an earlier post, members of the U of A Greek Life Community attended the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values (AFLV) Central Conference in Indianapolis. The executive boards for the Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, United Greek Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council as well as presidents of each of the organizations attended. With 41 students, 3 graduate assistants, 1 intern, 1 Assistant Director and the Director of Greek Life all at the conference, the University of Arkansas was one of the largest delegations represented.

In addition to listening to keynote speakers and attending various educational sessions, AFLV hosted a Stroll Competition. Not only were students able to watch 8 wonderful teams compete, but were also able to learn about the history behind Strolling. The University of Arkansas’s “United Stroll Team” consisted of 17 members. The team had representation from Panhellenic, Interfraternity, UGC, NPHC, as well as Greek Life Staff. With a lot of hard work and passion, the U of A Stroll Team did an incredible job. The audience was engaged, recording their performance and even gave them a standing ovation. We successfully won third place, earning a plaque and a $200 cash prize.

While placing in the Stroll Competition was very exciting, it was not the only award the U of A took home. An awards banquet was held during the last night of the conference, Saturday, January 31. It was such an honor to watch Parice Bowser, Director of Greek Life at the University of Arkansas and Chair of the AFLV Board of Directors, present some of the awards. The Panhellenic Council won an award for outstanding achievement in Panhellenic Division III for Public Relations. The United Greek Council won an award for outstanding achievement for Council Management. The National Pan-Hellenic Council won an award for outstanding achievement for Community Service. Finally, IFC President Drake Breshears and Assistant Director Megan Steely placed third in the Order of Omega Case Study Competition.

Overall, we had an amazing experience at AFLV. We established the phrase "4 Councils, 1 Community" that we will continue to live by for years to come. All of the student leaders as well as the Greek Life Staff learned so much and are very excited to implement it to continue to make Greek Life at the University of Arkansas the very best.
