This past weekend the 2014 spring pledge class of Phi Mu had
their annual pledge class retreat. The day started off with ice-skating at the
Jones Center in Springdale. It became quickly obvious that ice-skating was not
the majority of the girls’ fortes. After a rocky start, the girls began
attempting to do turns/leaps and are now on quick paths to the next winter
Olympics.
After some time skating, the girls made their way to the
Arkansas Union where they had a rented room waiting for them. The first activity
on the agenda was an icebreaker name game, where each girl had to catch a beach
ball and answer the question of which one of their hands landed on. This game
was a great way for each girl to learn each others names and interesting facts
about one another.
As the day continued the girls continued to play more name
games, practiced chants and had a canvas painting party. When talking about her
favorite part of the entrie retreat, Phi (Phi is the same thing as a spring
pledge class member) Mindy Ware said “my favorite part of the retreat was the
ice-skating because it was fun to laugh and make memories with everyone.”
After watching these girls get to know each other and hang
out all day it was obvious the bond that they had created. To wrap up the entire
day, the girls sat in a circle and tossed a yarn ball to one another and as
each girl got the yarn they had to state why they joined Phi Mu and how it has
impacted their lives. By the end of the activity the girls could see how the
yarn web interconnected each of them and became the bond that ties them
together as sisters in Phi Mu.
Lastly, Mindy said “I loved that everyone became
so close like a family and created a bond with each other in such a short
amount of time.” The girls overall, enjoyed the entire day and created memories
that will last a lifetime with each of their new sisters.
